Product Review: Catalyst Insight

Product Review: Catalyst Insight – Law.com – Brett Burney

Searching documents in e-discovery should be fast. No one has time to wait for a database to churn out search results. Fortunately, most of today’s hosted document review platforms are speedy enough, but could they be faster?

That’s a question that John Tredennick and his team at Catalyst Repository Systems, Inc., set out to answer several years ago when they started to push the limits of current technology in their larger cases. The “structured query language” (SQL) that most platforms use requires data to be placed in some kind of a structure before it can be searched. But most of the data involved in e-discovery is unstructured in the form of email, Word documents, text files, etc. That’s why Tredennick and the Catalyst team turned to an XML-based back end for their new Insight document review platform.  …Read the full article on Law.com…

Quick View Plus 12 Makes Short Work of Viewing Multiple File Types

Quick View Plus 12 Makes Short Work of Viewing Multiple File Types – Law.com – Brett Burney

Most of us never consider what software we need to open and view a file. Most operating systems such as Microsoft Windows and Apple OS associate file types with applications so documents open in Microsoft Word, PDF files open in Adobe Acrobat; and spreadsheets open in Microsoft Excel.

But what about those rare occasions when you don’t have the necessary software installed on your computer? What do you do when someone sends you a Microsoft Project file, or an AutoCAD drawing, or a PaintShop Pro image? Do you call IT and simply demand they install more software?

This is where a general file viewer can help. Avantstar Inc.’s Quick View Plus 12 Professional can display more than 300 different file formats including many old, outdated formats where the software is no longer available. Quick View Plus is only a file viewer so it doesn’t allow you to edit the content of a file. But if all you need to do is view the content of a file, Quick View Plus is a faster and more efficient means to your end than opening the file in its native software application.  …Read the full article on Law.com…

Nextpoint Lunch in Cleveland – Technology for Preservation, Discovery & Trial

I am thrilled to be speaking at a free Nextpoint Luncheon in downtown Cleveland on Monday, November 14, 2011.

I’ve helped several lawyers and law firms move their e-discovery needs “to the cloud” by utilizing a service like Nextpoint, and I am grateful that Nextopint will be an event where I can share my experiences with others.

I’ve watched Nextpoint grow quite a bit over the last few years from focusing on trial presentation (here’s my TechnoLawyer Review), to providing a document review database, and most recently launching their excellent Cloud Preservation tool that can help litigators capture websites, blogs, Twitter feeds, and many other social networking streams.

The official session description is below and you can register at http://www.nextpoint.com/cleveland.html
